Advocates in San Francisco handed out leaflets to tourists on Pier 33 waiting in line for the Alcatraz tour as part of the May 23rd coordinated actions.
The 23rd of the month emphasizes the 23 or more hours every day that people are kept in solitary confinement in small concrete cells.
Organized, community-based pressure is a core strategy to end solitary confinement. Groups around California (and nationwide) are holding actions, including in San Francisco, Eureka, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, San Jose, and Santa Cruz.
